How to Preserve Digital Evidence

The safest first step is often to stop changing the source and document what exists before attempting recovery or analysis.

Preserve context as well as content

Keep original devices and files, record dates and circumstances, preserve full messages rather than screenshots alone and avoid resetting, updating or repeatedly using a device that may contain relevant evidence. Do not install recovery tools on the source drive.

For online material, capture the visible content, URL, account identity and date, but understand that screenshots may not preserve metadata or prove authorship. Legal matters may require a controlled collection process coordinated with counsel.
